Doctor of Nursing Practice Program:
Update
The University of Alabama in Huntsville and the University of Alabama in Birmingham have recently been approved by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education to offer a joint Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. Final approval from the UA System Board of Trustees is anticipated in February, 2008.
The purposes of the DNP are to prepare graduates at the highest level of nursing practice
- to provide complex hospital and community-based care,
- to redesign and evaluate nursing and health care systems, and
- to address the shortages of clinical nursing faculty who will mentor and educate new nurses.
Once final approval is granted, we anticipate admitting students in Spring, 2008 for classes in the Fall, 2008 semester. Post-Master's students who have earned the Master's degree in an advanced practice specialty will be admitted.
The curriculum, for those admitted in the first class, will be 34 credit hours and will include a total of 7 credit hours in the development and implementation of a scholarly practice project.
In subsequent years, we anticipate offering the program to post-baccalaureate students.
For additional information regarding the DNP program contact the Associate Dean's office at 256-824-6669 or the Office of Student Affairs at 256-824-6742.
Updated information on admission dates and courses will be posted on this web site after final approval.
