Quick Guide to WebCT for Students

What is WebCT?
WebCT (Web Course
Tools) is a web-based course management system that many
instructors at UAH use to make course materials available to
students. WebCT tools also allow students to communicate with their
instructor and/or with one another. Although not every instructor
will use all of the available features, here are some of the things
you might do in WebCT: check
your grades, take a
quiz or complete a survey, turn
in projects or other assignments, check the class calendar,
complete an online
tutorial, access an audio-
or video-based lecture, view or print a handout,
browse Internet links
related to course material, or create an online group presentation.
Will I have to download and install
software in order to use WebCT?
WebCT is a completely web-based system and the only software you
will need to connect to WebCT is an up-to-date web browser such as
Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator or Communicator (see browser
requirements in the next section). Some classes may require the use
of helper applications or plug-ins to access some class materials.
For example, most video lectures at UAH require the free Windows
Media Player. Your instructor should notify you whenever additional
software is needed for a course. To download commonly used helper
applications and plug-ins, visit the Software
Downloads page.
What kind of computer hardware and
software will I need to use WebCT?
Since you will access WebCT over the web, your computer must be
able to connect to the Internet. You must use an approved web
browser with Java and JavaScript enabled. For
more information about setting up your web browser for use with
WebCT, go to http://classweb.uah.edu/browser.htm.
How do I Login to WebCT?
To login to a WebCT course, you will need two pieces of
information: a WebCT ID (or user name) and a password. Your WebCT ID
is the first part of your UAH e-mail address, the part before the
“@” symbol. Your WebCT password will be the last four digits of
your social security number. For example, John Doe has the e-mail
address doejohn@email.uah.edu and his student number
is 555-77-9999. John Doe's WebCT user name and
password would be:
User Name: doejohn Password: 9999
If you do not know what your UAH e-mail address is, go to the
student registration site at http://register.uah.edu
and then login to Student Services. Under Personal Information,
click View E-mail Addresses to find your UAH e-mail address. You can
also search for your e-mail address at http://www.uah.edu/email.html.
If you cannot find your e-mail address through either of those two
methods, contact the Information Services help desk at 824-HELP or
Charger Central at 824-7777.
Logging in to WebCT – Once
you have your WebCT ID and password, you are ready to login to WebCT.
- Go to http://classweb.uah.edu
- Click the link Login to WebCT or the WebCT logo.

- Enter your WebCT ID (user name) and password and click OK.

Caution: Be careful about selecting the "Save this
password in your password list" option. You should select
this option only on a private computer and never in a public

to enter (under Courses). You may notice that if you have
multiple courses that use WebCT, they all show up here on the
myWebCT page.

Troubleshooting – If you do
not see any courses listed on your myWebCT page, contact your
instructor to make sure he/she has added your name to the course.
