Study Tips for Distance Learners
Tips for Web-based and Compact Disc Courses:
- Begin your course with the belief that you will be successful
- Know all
course requirements and deadlines and submit assignments promptly
- Develop a regular schedule for viewing programs and completing readings
and special assignments. Avoid disruptions or distractions during the time you
have reserved for yourself for viewing and studying.
- Establish a set routine for when and where you will study (your bedroom
or kitchen are probably not the best places to study!)
- Try to do a little bit each day so that you don't have to rush to meet a
deadline
- Keep note taking to a minimum when viewing online or onscreen
instructional content
- Complete the assigned reading and study-guide activities
before you view the class on the Web or on the CD
- Contact the professor by e-mail or phone for help if you are having
difficulty understanding a unit of study or if scheduling conflicts arise
- Be sure to attend on-campus sessions for orientations, selected class
sessions, and examinations
- Make sure you have access to all written materials from the professor as
well as the assigned textbooks
- Identify a study distance learning partner for each course
- Develop a set of notes for each unit of study so you can review prior to
any examinations without having to read the entire text before the examination
- Develop a vocabulary of terms that are important for the course,
especially those that are unfamiliar to you. Write the definitions in your own
words and review them at the end of each reading or after viewing the programs
