E-Mail Alias

Dean Luquire, as the new CIO, announced via e-mail on October 19th, 2007 that an email alias in the format Firstname.Lastname@uah.edu will be setup in the same format for every active student, faculty, and staff. The alias will go into effect October 31st, 2007.

What does this mean to faculty, staff, and students?

  1. Your email username (the one you use to login to ChargerMail or your email.uah.edu mail client) will not change. It will still be either your last name and first initial or your initials followed by a four digit number, e.g., for Jane Zoe Doe it might be doej or jzd0951
  2. Your existing email address will still work, e.g., doej@uah.edu or jzd0951@uah.edu. So there is no need to get new business cards unless you prefer to use the alias.
  3. Your officially listed email address will change from what it is now to Firstname.Lastname@uah.edu (unless it is already listed that way.) People will be able to reach you using your old address or using the new alias.
  4. If there is more than one person (faculty, staff, or student) on campus with the same first and last name, your alias may include your middle initial or some other way of uniquely identifying you, e.g., Jane.Z.Doe@uah.edu.

What do you need to do?

  1. If your name were Jane Zoe Doe and you are usually known as Jane Doe, then you don't need to do anything. Your alias will be setup automatically, but you should look yourself up in the UAH Campus directory after October 31st to ensure that the alias is right. You can find the directory here:
    http://www.uah.edu/cgi-bin/dirread.cgi
  2. If you go by something other than your first name, e.g., you are better known by a nickname or you use your middle name, you will need to visit this page:
    http://www.uah.edu/cgi-bin/alias.cgi
and fill out the alias you want to use, e.g., Zoe.Doe@uah.edu. You will need to log in using your WebCT username and password to request this change.
  3. If there is someone else on campus with the same name as you (e.g., at this time there are three people named David Brown and two of those are David A. Brown) the one who received the David.Brown alias will likely receive email intended for the other two in error. There's not much you can do about this other than let people you want to communicate with know your correct email address, but the situation should be better than it was using just the username@uah.edu.
