Room 104/109 Startup

This page describes how to get the equipment up and running for a PowerPoint or other PC presentation. To use other equipment you will still complete this basic startup, then follow the directions on the page relating to the specific piece of equipment.

This is what the sympodium in the classrooms looks like from the outside. The locations of the various parts are indicated by the arrows.

Sympodium Exterior

You select what will display on the projector and touch screen using the Presentation Switcher/Scaler located behind the bottom left door.

Initial Checks

  1. Make sure that the leftmost green light above the touch screen is lit. If this light is not, you won't see anything on the touch screen or the projector. To select it, press the button just below and to the left.

  2. Check the touch screen light is on (it should be orange or green). If the light is not on, press the power button on the right to turn it on.

  3. Unlock the three sympodium locks (insert and turn the key so that it is vertical). Faculty can obtain a key from the Dean's secretary. If the sympodium is locked and you do not have a key, LRC staff and most faculty will be able to unlock it for you.

  4. Check the volume levels on the amplifier. The controls usually should be set to:
    • DVD/VCR - 5th dot (11 o'clock)
    • PC - 3rd dot (9 o'clock)
    • Podium Mic - 4th dot (10 o'clock)
    • Wireless Mic - 4th dot (10 o'clock)
    • Master Volume - 5th dot (11 o'clock)

Turn on Devices

  1. The amplifier is located behind the bottom left door, this needs to be on for the PC, VCR/DVD, and microphones to work. Check that the green light on the right of the amplifier is on. If the green light is not on, press the power button (under the piece of paper). A series of lights will then come on before the power light turns green.

  3. The Kramer/Comprehensive Switcher-Scaler is located behind the bottom left door. The Power switch on the left lights up green when it is on. There will be no display on the projector or screen when this is off.

  4. The PC is behind the bottom right door. There will be a green light below the two purple buttons on the front when the PC is on. Turn on the PC using the larger purple button.

  5. The projector is mounted on top of the sympodium. The light labelled Power will be green when the projector is on, orange when in standby, and flashing when cooling down. To turn on the projector, press and hold the green power button for about two seconds (until the light turns green and the fan starts.) Note that if you turn off the projector, you will need to wait several minutes while it cools down before you can turn it back on.

Final Tasks

  1. Push the button labelled PC (DVI) on the Kramer/Comprehensive Switcher-Scaler, it should light up Red. You may have to wait a minute after the Switcher is turned on before this will work.

  2. Once the projector bulb has warmed up and an image is being projected on the screen, check the image is in focus (turn the ring around lens to focus.) You may also need to adjust the zoom so that the image fills the screen.
